Inquiry FAQ

Where are you located?
We have two photographers in two primary locations. Becca is located in Lenexa, KS servicing the Kansas City area. Kelly is located in Wayzata, MN servicing the Minneapolis area. We frequently travel to additional cities in Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma. Want us to travel to your favorite spot? Don’t be hesitate to ask us to meet you at your family vacation.

What is the best way to reach you?
Email is the best form of communication. Please allow up to 48 hours to answer all client inquiries. If you are a photographer and have industry questions, please allow up to 7 days. Our general email is info@beyouphotography.com. Or you may email becca@beyouphotography.com or kelly@beyouphotography.com.

How far in advance should we book?
On average you should plan to book your session 4-7 weeks in advance. Our busiest time of year  is August through December, of which we book 3-6 months in advance. Newborn sessions should be scheduled as soon as you know your expected due date. As the arrival time of a baby is sensitive, we will adjust the date as needed.

Where do you shoot?
We have two types of shoots. 1) Public locations such as parks, wooded scenic areas, and city spots. You are open to choose your desired locations upon availability. 2) On-location at client home or private property. These special settings are ideal for winter months, infants, special needs, or personal preferences.

Do you do Seniors?
We love our high school seniors! We enjoy doing the fresh and new things with high school seniors, but we keep our focus on real images that are timeless and age appropriate. All of our seniors receive a free promotional set of 50 wallets with purchase of a collection. Instead of investing in modeling reps, we appreciate all of our seniors and consider them representatives of BE YOU.

Can we do a session with extended family?
This is an ideal time to capture a “grandparent” photograph! A single session may be shared between grandchildren, parents, and grandparents. Time is limited to 45 minutes, and an additional fee is applied to each family grouping in attendance. To make the most of your extended family session, we recommend designating a leader for your group. This will be our main point of contact and the organizer during and after the session. It is also a good idea to create a list of certain shots and groupings that you want captured. For family groupings larger than Grandparent to Grandchildren, please inquire about additional fees and time.

What if the weather is bad?
The weather is something that is out of our control, although we do wish we had the magic button for that. We keep an optimistic attitude and a close watch on the forecast as session times approach. If inclement weather is in the forecast, we will be in close contact and make the best decision for you and your family. We do not cancel until the day of, however we do understand the personal preparation for pictures and will cancel as early as possible if we have to. Cancelled appointments will be made up as soon as both photographer and client schedules permit.

How long are your sessions?
Photo sessions last 45-60 minutes. We have found that is the ample amount of time to get the photos that we need, while maintaining the attention of children (and the parents too). Some families, and especially high school seniors, choose to book double sessions which allow for double the amount of time and proofs.

What to wear?
First consider a vision that you want your pictures to have. Is it a season, a year round look, dressy or casual, etc. How will you be using your final portraits? (to decorate your home, greeting cards, gifts, etc). My most important rule is “Layers are key” when creating a look that belongs in a magazine.  Here are some additional tips to do and not do:
– Avoid matching perfectly. Instead plan a multi-colored scheme that compliments each other.
– Avoid solid and plain clothing. Instead add texture to solid colors and add layers. Layers are key to making a look that belongs in a magazine!
– Avoid colors that contrast dramatically with your skin tone. For example, navy blue and black does not compliment pale skin.
– Avoid trendy clothing. What will you think of that outfit 5, 10, or 20 years from now. Instead choose pieces that are more timeless yet fresh.
– Texture and accessories add amazing detail to photographs and are sometimes the best props. Ideas include hats, bows, scarves, tutus.
– Bring or wear heirlooms. They make wonderful props and add a story to your photographs.

How much do clients typically spend?
On average our clients spend $550-$2500 including their booking fee. Most clients purchase digital images, home displays, gift books, and holiday greeting cards.

If I purchase a digital collection, how does it work?
All collections include a download of your final images as digital JPGs. You will receive an email with a link to download the files. Included is a reproduction release form providing the rights to print, scan, and copy up to size 8×10. Be You Photography still obtains the original copyright, and retains the right to use any and all photographs for the general promotion of business and publication. The slideshow presentation in your online gallery is for web viewing only and is not included. Digital musical slideshows may be purchased separately for $35.

Will any of my images be trimmed during printing? What is Aspect Ratio?
Some print sizes are not the same shape as your proofs, and this is due to aspect ratio. The pictures in your gallery are rectangular, and 5×7 prints and 8×10 prints, for example, are much closer to squares. In order to print the images with those dimensions, some of the image MUST be trimmed to create the prints with those dimensions. If you do not want any of the picture trimmed, you must order a print size that is the same rectangular shape as the original. Those sizes are: 4×6, 8×12, 12×18, and 20×30 (ask about ordering any special sizes in enlargements). All other sizes will require trimming. When fulfilling your orders, we are very careful to preserve as much of the original composition as possible. Be You Photography branding on proofs is for copyright restrictions during online viewing. All ordered prints are protected by copyright laws, and will not obtain company branding on image.
